A Brief History of Calvin Christian Schools

For over 50 years, Calvin Christian has experienced God’s blessings and faithfulness.  The original building on Sutton Avenue, is now embedded in the present building.  However, God’s call to us to educate children and young people has never changed.  The vision of the original forefathers and mothers of Calvin Christian, continues to inspire and guide us forward in that call.  Listed below are some of the key events in our schools history:

  • 1958: The Greater Winnipeg Society for Christian Education is formed
  • 1960: 65 students in Grades 3-6 begin school, 2 teachers
  • 1961: Grades 7 and 8 are added
  • 1964: Grades 1 and 2 are added as well as a music program
  • 1973: Home Economics and French program added
  • 1975: Gym is added to the north side of the school
  • 1977: The first graduates that attended Calvin from 1-9 are celebrated
  • 1980: Portable classroom added
  • 1983: Second portable is added
  • 1984: The first double Kindergarten class
  • 1989: First expansion of new gym, classrooms, library and MPR room
  • 1990: Land on the east side is purchased
  • 1996: Second expansion to the north side of building – classrooms & computer room
  • May 2001: The society purchases the Day Street campus.
  • Sept. 2002: The Day Street campus opens its doors for students in Grades 7-10.
  • Sept. 2004: Calvin Christian reaches more than 500 students for the first time.
  • April 2005: First Calvin Christian Collegiate Mission to Mexico trip.
  • June 2005: The collegiate graduates its first class of Grade 12 students.
  • April 2012: First Inner City Experience for Grade 12 students.
  • Sept. 2012: Two portables are added for more classroom space.
  • June 2013: Mr. Dave Taylor retires as principal of CCC.
  • Sept. 2013: Mr. Ray Algera begins his tenure as principal of CCC.
  • August 2015:  New collegiate gymnasium completed.
